Frequently Asked Questions

What is Physical AI?

Physical AI is the ability for machines to behave autonomously in the real world, using on-device sensors, intelligence, actuators, and communication. Physical AI platforms understand the space around them in the context of their roles, removing boundaries and acting autonomously to operate in dynamic, unpredictable environments. The machines that transport and work with humans will sense, think, act, and communicate in the real world.
MIPS delivers processor IP based on open standards to address the computing challenges of the sense, think, act, communicate paradigm for robotics. Adopting RISC-V unlocks the ability to target specific workloads in an open, standards-based approach. The MIPS approach is to work with customer to identify algorithms and specific workloads to integrate them into the processor IP to increase efficiency and performance. Rather than using a general purpose CPU, proprietary GPU or some other fixed-function hardware block and just build them into single chip, MIPS integrates them into a processor. MIPS has a heritage of adaptability and was selected for Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo 64, and Cisco routers, targeting specific workloads and markets. Now we’re delivering scalable Physical AI solutions for autonomous edge platforms across multiple markets.
RISC-V is an open standard and extensible instruction set architecture (ISA) for designing computer processors. Processor ISAs describe how software and hardware work together by defining the instructions, data storage, and organization of the computing machine. Working with 1000’s of RISC-V International members, MIPS collaborates to define standards and development for RISC-V specifications, and contributes to the ecosystem of tools, libraries, and support needed. The open nature of RISC-V is perfectly suited to the software/hardware co-design used to build modern autonomous platforms.
RISC-V is a freely available open standard instruction set architecture that unlocks freedom to innovate new computing platforms. RISC-V is developed and maintained by members of leading technology companies, universities, and research institutions. RISC-V provides a modern, open and modular approach to building technology where adopters can choose what they need and remove what they don’t. Commercial providers and open-source community members create, build, and maintain the ecosystem without relying on a central entity, with RISC-V profiles enabling standardization for different computing platforms.
The MIPS Atlas portfolio is the combination of RISC-V processor IP branded MIPS Atlas IP, and the MIPS Atlas software & tools products. Now in its 8th generation, MIPS Atlas IP offers processor cores to enable scalable platforms for Physical AI sense, think, act, and communicate workloads. MIPS Atlas software and tools enable customers to think software-first and optimize their platform design ahead of building physical devices. MIPS software and tools provide everything a customer needs to get started with Physical AI solutions for autonomous edge products.
MIPS technology enables the adoption of AI in real-time event-driven products for high-growth autonomous edge markets such as aerospace, automotive, communications and enterprise infrastructure, embedded computing, and industrial robotics.

With the backing of GlobalFoundries we can accelerate our roadmap development and better support our customers, delivering RISC-V at foundry scale.
